Arizona’s Legislative Power Shift: Democrats Near Historic Milestone

In a significant turn of events, the initial counts from Tuesday’s general election suggest that Democrats are on the brink of seizing control of the Arizona Legislature, a feat not accomplished in nearly 60 years.

Several key races in Arizona’s House and Senate, particularly in the northern regions, have reached decisive stages or are close to resolution. Notably, Legislative District 6 witnessed a Democratic victory with Jamescita Peshlakai, a member of the Navajo Nation, securing a seat. Her jurisdiction spans a rural area encompassing various tribal nations, including the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe and the Yavapai-Apache Nation.

Adding to the Democratic gains, Mae Peshlakai, Jamescita’s mother, successfully retained her seat in the state House within the same district. Both hail from Cameron, reinforcing the family’s political influence in the area.

Meanwhile, in Legislative District 7, Republican state Senator Wendy Rogers clinched reelection. The district, which covers locales such as Heber, Snowflake, and Payson, also showed strong support for Republican state Representatives Walt Blackman and David Cook Sr., who led the preliminary results for the dual state House positions.
