New Appointment in Cochise County Amid Election Controversy
In a strategic move, Cochise County officials have appointed Billy Cloud, a seasoned professional with a background in law enforcement and legislative work, as the new county recorder. Cloud steps into the role following the resignation of his predecessor, David Stevens, amid a backdrop of election-related controversies.
Billy Cloud’s extensive experience includes serving as an officer for the Arizona Department of Public Safety and leading police departments in Tombstone and Patagonia. Additionally, he has held the position of sergeant at arms in the Arizona House and worked as a financial investigations manager within the Arizona Department of Economic Security’s adult protective services.
The resignation of David Stevens, effective February 28, came just ten days after he was sworn in for his third term. Stevens cited personal reasons, stating he needed to “prioritize my family and health.”
Cochise County has been under scrutiny due to some officials’ alignment with unconventional election procedures inspired by conspiracy theories after the 2020 election. Notably, two members of the county’s Board of Supervisors faced criminal charges for postponing the certification of the 2022 midterm election results. One member pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and received probation, while the other maintains their innocence and is awaiting trial.
