Arizona AG Challenges Federal Bill, Advocates for Stricter Online Protections
Arizona’s Attorney General Kris Mayes, alongside a group of bipartisan attorneys general, is taking a stand against a proposed federal bill, citing concerns that it might weaken efforts to regulate tech companies’ responsibilities online. This action signals an important debate over the balance between federal and state authority in holding tech giants accountable.
The contentious bill, HR 7757, is under scrutiny for potentially shifting cases related to social media, obscenity, and AI chatbots to federal jurisdiction. Critics argue this shift could undermine state-level efforts to address online harms, especially those affecting minors.
Richie Taylor from the Arizona AG’s office expressed concerns about the bill’s implications, stating, “We believe it would broadly preempt state laws that address online harm to minors. It also does not include a meaningful duty of care for online platforms.” This lack of duty of care, Taylor implied, could allow tech companies to evade responsibility for potential harms caused by their platforms.
AG Mayes is urging Congress to dismiss the House bill, emphasizing the need for more stringent accountability measures for tech companies. She stated, “HR 7757 lets Big Tech off the hook and would hurt the ability of states like Arizona to protect children online. The safety of our children is more important than maximizing profits for Big Tech companies and the billionaires who own them.”
The coalition of attorneys general is instead supporting a Senate bill that retains the duty of care requirement while ensuring states maintain their authority to implement protective measures.
