Arizona Prepares for Intense Wildfire Season Amidst Extreme Heat and Drought

As temperatures soar and drought conditions persist, Arizona is gearing up for what could be a challenging wildfire season. The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, along with federal and tribal partners, provided a briefing to Governor Katie Hobbs, highlighting concerns for the upcoming months.

Forecasts indicate an aggressive wildfire season fueled by record-breaking heat and ongoing drought. Fire activity is expected to intensify across the Mogollon Rim by May, with northeastern Arizona and elevated regions also at risk. Southern and southeastern parts of the state are particularly vulnerable due to prolonged dry spells and a surplus of fine fuels.

Already, fires have been reported near Forest Lakes and Flagstaff, hinting at the potential severity of this year’s fire season. Last year, over 1,600 wildfires were recorded statewide, and current conditions suggest a possibility of surpassing that number.
