Prescribed Burn Scheduled in Mingus Mountain Area

Residents and visitors near Mingus Mountain in Arizona should prepare for visible smoke this week as the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management carries out a controlled pile burn. The operation, which is expected to last several days, is set to start on Tuesday, weather permitting.

The Mingus Springs project involves burning 167 acres of forest debris, including 40 piles primarily composed of ponderosa pine. These piles are remnants of previous efforts to reduce wildfire risks in the area.

Tiffany Davila, a representative from the Forestry and Fire Management Department, indicated that the smoke from this burn will be noticeable from a distance. The site is located roughly 10 miles east of Prescott. “The project is gonna be highly visible because of the ponderosa pine component in the piles. They’re heavy piles,” Davila explained. “And then the location of the burn also, so it will be very visible to Prescott, Prescott Valley, people in Sedona.”

While the activity is expected to be seen from afar, officials have noted that smoke will likely impact nearby communities only minimally. Areas that might experience some smoke include Verde Valley, Prescott, Prescott Valley, and the Mingus Mountain recreation areas. Additionally, there is a possibility that smoke could settle over the Verde Valley during the night.
