Arizona’s Political Climate Heats Up with Investigation into Governor Hobbs
As election season intensifies in Arizona, the state’s political landscape is further complicated by an ongoing investigation into Governor Katie Hobbs. Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes announced on Monday that her office is nearing the conclusion of an inquiry into allegations of a pay-to-play scheme involving Hobbs.
Both Hobbs and Mayes are entrenched in competitive reelection campaigns. The investigation, which has become a focal point for Hobbs’ opponent, Congressman Andy Biggs, centers around accusations that Hobbs awarded a state contract favorably to a group home that contributed to her 2022 gubernatorial campaign and the Democratic Party.
“When we have a result in this investigation, we will make an announcement, and we are near the end of the investigation,” Mayes stated, highlighting the imminent developments in the case.
Adding another layer to the issue, Republican Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell is conducting a separate probe into the same allegations against Hobbs.
Governor Hobbs has expressed support for legislation aimed at increasing transparency in state contracts to prevent similar allegations in the future. However, she has yet to enact any such measures.
In a related move, Hobbs vetoed a disclosure bill proposed by State Sen. T.J. Shope (R-Coolidge), which aimed to address these transparency issues.
Attorney General Mayes emphasized the seriousness of the investigation, noting that no one is exempt from scrutiny, including the governor. Mayes did not disclose whether her forthcoming announcement would involve Governor Hobbs, who has not yet agreed to an interview with the attorney general’s office.
While Mayes refrained from answering questions about specific aspects of the investigation, the political repercussions continue to reverberate as both parties prepare for the November elections.
