Arizona House Republicans Push Forward with Budget Despite Governor’s Opposition
In a move that could set the stage for further political maneuvering, Republicans in the Arizona House of Representatives passed a state budget late Friday night, fully aware that Gov. Katie Hobbs has already expressed her intention to veto it.
The budget package, which was finalized after a day of intensive discussions and revisions, narrowly passed with 31 votes from Republican members. This slim margin was achieved despite the absence of two GOP representatives, Reps. Justin Wilmeth and Chris Lopez, and a complete boycott by all 27 Democratic representatives.
Governor Hobbs and Democratic leaders have consistently stated their disapproval of the House budget, labeling it as ineffective since it lacks the governor’s approval. They are currently negotiating an alternative budget plan with Senate Republicans. As noted by the House Democrats on social media, “This is a silly waste of time and not a serious budget proposal. House Republicans should be ashamed of wasting time and taxpayer dollars.” They further expressed eagerness to collaborate on a bipartisan budget in the coming week.
Rep. Matt Gress (R-Phoenix), who played a key role in formulating the House budget, remains optimistic. He suggested that the upcoming Senate budget will bear a strong resemblance to the House’s version. “I had the great privilege over the last couple of hours to review the Senate budget plan, and I have to say this plan is very close to what we’re voting on right now,” Gress said during the vote, highlighting his belief that “85%” of the House budget will be incorporated into the final version that Governor Hobbs accepts.
Negotiations between Gov. Hobbs and Senate Republicans have been ongoing for weeks, excluding House GOP leadership from the discussions. The introduction of their budget proposal is anticipated as soon as next Monday.
