Health Alert: Properly Washing Produce to Prevent Parasitic Infection

Amid rising concerns, health experts are urging the public to thoroughly wash fresh produce to prevent illness. This advice comes after an outbreak of Cyclosporaisis, a parasitic infection, was reported across 31 states, including Arizona.

Cyclosporaisis leads to symptoms such as stomach cramps, fatigue, and diarrhea, typically appearing about a week after exposure. Dr. Frank Lovecchio from Valleywise Health has noted that the infection is caused by consuming produce contaminated with human feces.

The infection has been linked to several types of produce, including cilantro, basil, lettuce, raspberries, salad mixes, and snow peas. “The foods that it’s been linked to have included cilantro, basil, lettuce, raspberry, salad mixes, snow peas,” Dr. Lovecchio stated.

Arizona has reported at least 10 cases this year, with many affected individuals attributing their illness to consuming romaine lettuce. “The people in Arizona seem to report that it occurred from eating romaine lettuce,” Dr. Lovecchio added.

While most individuals can recover without medical intervention, those with weakened immune systems or pre-existing conditions may require treatment, with dehydration being a primary concern. Fortunately, the infection is not easily transmissible from person to person.
