Democrats Lead in Arizona Corporation Commission Race as GOP Concedes

The Arizona Corporation Commission race is witnessing an intense competition as Democrats are currently leading in a closely contested battle for two seats. This commission, responsible for regulating the majority of Arizona’s utilities, has been under Republican control, but the dynamics may soon change.

Democratic Candidates in the Lead

As of Thursday evening, Clara Pratte and Jonathon Hill, the Democratic contenders, hold the lead with 27.1% and 26% of the votes, respectively. Meanwhile, Republican incumbent Kevin Thompson trails with 23.5%, followed by Ralph Heap at 22%.

Heap has officially conceded the race, and Thompson has also acknowledged his defeat, expressing pride in his past achievements while stating that “the voters have spoken and have elected for change.”

Background on the Candidates

Thompson, previously a lobbyist for the gas industry, has been instrumental in controversial decisions to repeal rules perceived as burdensome, such as renewable energy mandates. His energy strategy emphasized a balanced approach, integrating renewables with natural gas and nuclear energy.

Heap, who emerged victorious in the GOP primary by defeating Nick Myers, advocated for sustaining coal power in Arizona’s energy portfolio but encountered challenges, including a campaign finance complaint.

Conversely, Pratte and Hill have voiced concerns about the commission’s tendency to favor utilities excessively. Pratte, a co-founder of Navajo Power, champions renewable energy projects, while Hill, a NASA-affiliated geologist and spacecraft engineer, supports a diversified energy approach prioritizing renewables for their cost-effectiveness and rapid deployment.
