EVIT Steps In to Ease Transportation Burden for Partner School Districts
The East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) is taking significant steps to ensure that transportation costs do not hinder students from accessing career and technical education opportunities. In a strategic move to support nearby school districts, EVIT has pledged to cover a portion of the transportation expenses incurred by these districts.
The collaboration between EVIT and the local school districts aims to provide high school students with valuable career and technical education courses. Despite this cooperative effort, a legal dispute over the allocation of funds remains unresolved.
According to EVIT Superintendent Chad Wilson, the institute will contribute $2 million to mitigate the transportation costs. “That cost from the member districts was roughly $4 million. And so we offered to pay half that cost so that those students can have the opportunity that they were committed to being given last fall,” Wilson explained.
The decision to share transportation expenses emerged after the districts announced plans to halt transportation services in the coming school year. To accommodate this financial commitment, EVIT will temporarily suspend renovations on its main campus.
Wilson expressed concern about the impact on families, stating, “To not provide transportation will clearly hurt families that don’t have the means to be able to get the transportation on their own, right?”
Meanwhile, the Chandler Unified School District highlighted the financial challenges of providing transportation. In a statement, the district noted that these costs divert funding away from classrooms and teacher staffing.
