Intense Heat Alert Issued for Northern Arizona’s Lower Elevations
The National Weather Service has announced an extreme heat warning for this weekend, targeting regions in northern Arizona, specifically the Grand Canyon areas below 4,000 feet. This warning is set to commence at 10 a.m. on Saturday and will remain in effect until 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Forecasts predict that temperatures at Havasupai Gardens may soar to 102 degrees Fahrenheit, while Phantom Ranch could face highs of up to 110 degrees. In light of these conditions, authorities advise hikers on the Bright Angel Trail to refrain from descending beyond 1.5 miles from the trailhead and to limit physical activities during the hottest parts of the day, particularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
It is crucial for hikers to be well-prepared by carrying salty snacks, ample water, and electrolytes. Additionally, doubling calorie intake is recommended to sustain energy levels and help prevent heat-related illnesses. For further guidance, visitors can access the Grand Canyon National Park’s key hiking messages page.
The warning extends to Supai Village within the Havasupai reservation. Similarly, extreme heat warnings blanket most of southern Arizona, with Tucson expected to reach 111 degrees and Phoenix peaking at 112 degrees on Sunday.
