New Avalanche Alerts Aim to Enhance Safety in San Francisco Peaks
In a bid to bolster public safety and awareness, the Flagstaff National Weather Service has announced a new initiative involving the release of avalanche reports. This effort is in collaboration with the Coconino National Forest and the Kachina Peaks Avalanche Center. As part of this initiative, detailed warnings and notifications will be distributed during periods of significant avalanche risk in the San Francisco Peaks backcountry.
This marks the first instance of the weather service taking on the responsibility of disseminating such critical safety alerts. The alerts will specifically address areas of extreme avalanche danger, providing information on precise locations and elevations affected. However, these warnings will not encompass the Arizona Snowbowl ski area, as the resort is equipped to perform its own avalanche risk assessments and implement necessary mitigation strategies.
The introduction of this system comes as a response to the need for heightened awareness about avalanche risks among those venturing into backcountry areas. By providing timely and accurate information, the initiative aims to enhance decision-making and safety for outdoor enthusiasts navigating these potentially hazardous regions.
