Flash Floods Force Highway Closure on Navajo Nation
Following intense flash floods, a crucial section of Highway 160 on the Navajo Nation has been closed by the Arizona Department of Transportation. This decision affects the stretch east of Kayenta, specifically near Dennehotso and Laguna Wash, due to severe road damage.
The closure stretches from milepost 402 to the US 160/US161 junction at milepost 435. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes via Highway 191 and State Route 59, passing through the Many Farms community, to navigate around this closed section.
Visual evidence of the destruction was shared on social media by Navajo transportation officials, showing a significant portion of the highway with a large gap where the pavement once was.
This closure is expected to impact the transportation of uranium ore. The usual route from the Pinyon Plain Mine near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to southern Utah is now disrupted.
The incident follows a tragic event on Wednesday in the Newcomb community in New Mexico, where flash floods claimed the lives of three individuals on the Navajo Nation.
