An Iconic Film Returns to Its Roots in Arizona

This Saturday offers a unique cinematic experience as the Loft Cinema presents a free outdoor screening of the 1976 classic “A Star is Born” at Empire Ranch in Sonoita, Arizona. This location holds historical significance as it served as a backdrop for the film’s production.

While many may recall the 2018 rendition featuring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, the narrative first graced the screen in 1937 with Janet Gaynor as the star. The 1976 version, however, brought together the talents of Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. It was notably filmed in both Los Angeles and the Arizona desert, capturing a significant scene at Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium, where almost 50,000 extras contributed to the film’s authenticity.

Attendees are invited to bring their chairs and enjoy the film under the stars, as it is showcased as part of Empire Ranch’s series of classic Western movie screenings. This event not only celebrates cinema but also pays homage to the rich history of the location itself.
