Mass Deportation Coalition Pushes for Increased Worksite Enforcement

In an effort to reshape immigration enforcement, the Mass Deportation Coalition, which includes groups like the Heritage Foundation, has introduced a playbook prioritizing worksite enforcement. This strategy aims to hold employers accountable for hiring undocumented workers.

Recently, federal authorities conducted raids at several Zipps sports bars across Metro Phoenix, reflecting the coalition’s proposed enforcement methods.

According to Phoenix attorney Juliana Manzanarez, “And they are not being vague. They are being very clear. And historically when policies are outlined this explicitly, we should take them seriously.”

The coalition’s plan includes revamping the process of employment verification. Manzanarez explained that by eliminating job opportunities, the incentive for undocumented individuals to remain in the country diminishes.

A former kitchen manager at Zipps is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to hiring undocumented workers. The coalition is also advocating for legislative changes to prohibit undocumented individuals from accessing financial services like banks and credit unions.

Manzanarez highlighted the impact of such measures, stating, “If there’s no bank account, there’s no lease approvals. There’s no credit. There’s no way to pay your bills. There’s no way to pay your rent or your mortgage. And it effectively pushes people out of the formal financial system.”

An Arizona bill aiming to block financial services for undocumented immigrants has passed the Senate but awaits approval in the House.
