Measles Outbreak Hits Over 500 Cases Along Arizona-Utah Border

The Arizona-Utah border is grappling with a severe measles outbreak that has surged past 500 cases, highlighting vaccination challenges in the region. The outbreak, which began last August, has now resulted in 516 confirmed cases, with 274 in Arizona and 242 in southwest Utah, according to health department reports from both states.

This health crisis is primarily affecting the Short Creek community, encompassing Colorado City, Ariz., and Hildale, Utah. Notably, Mohave County, Arizona, is experiencing one of the lowest MMR vaccination rates in the state, having dropped to 78.4% by 2024.

Over 40 individuals have required hospitalization due to measles complications in both states. Despite the alarming numbers, data from the Arizona Department of Health Services indicates a slowdown in infections in Mohave County since their peak last December. Arizona reported 15 new cases in March and 20 in February.

A staggering 97% of those infected in Arizona were unvaccinated, with two-thirds of the cases affecting individuals under 18. Coconino County has reported two cases since early 2026, emphasizing the ongoing challenge.

In Utah, the situation is escalating, with more than 360 cases reported statewide since the start of 2026, predominantly in the southern region. Health officials in Coconino County are actively investigating potential exposures after a new case was confirmed in Page.
