Mexico Launches Gun Buyback Program Offering Cash for Firearms

Mexico’s New Gun Buyback Initiative Promotes Disarmament

In an effort to address gun violence, President Claudia Sheinbaum has introduced a nationwide initiative that invites citizens to trade their firearms for cash incentives. The program, titled “Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace,” sets up various drop-off locations across Mexico, including in local churches.

Participants in this initiative can surrender their firearms without fear of investigation and receive monetary compensation in return. The program offers approximately $400 USD for a revolver, with higher payouts available for more powerful weapons.

During the launch event, children were also encouraged to participate by swapping toy guns for educational toys, thereby promoting a culture of peace from a young age.

Gun violence remains a significant issue in Mexico, with thousands of fatalities linked to firearms annually. Many of these weapons are illicitly trafficked from the United States, exacerbating the violence fueled by ongoing cartel conflicts.
