A groundbreaking cancer test is now available from a Michigan Medicine lab, marking a significant advancement in cancer detection. Developed at the University of Michigan, MyHPVscore is a pioneering blood test designed to identify HPV-related head and neck cancer. This test works by detecting tumor DNA fragments in a patient’s blood, offering a new, noninvasive diagnostic tool.
“We needed to create this lab because patients needed results,” stated J. Chad Brenner, Ph.D., director of the Michigan Otolaryngology and Translational Oncology Laboratory. “There are almost no otolaryngology departments nationally that have such a lab.”
Operational since July 2022, the joint Otolaryngology and Pathology clinical lab began processing samples in October. Initially serving Michigan patients, the lab aims to expand nationally, with plans to analyze up to 50 samples daily in the coming year, eventually scaling up to 400 samples per day.
Approximately 48,000 Americans are diagnosed with HPV+ cancer annually, highlighting the test’s potential impact. MyHPVscore not only aids in diagnosis but also helps doctors and patients monitor treatment effectiveness. “This test can detect recurrent disease before patients have any signs or symptoms,” said Keith Casper, M.D., U-M clinical associate professor for Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
The incidence of HPV-related head and neck cancers is rising, with many young adults, especially men, not vaccinated despite approval for adults up to age 45. The Michigan lab is the first to offer a circulating biomarker test for these cancers, a milestone attributed to Michigan Health’s support in translating lab innovations into practical patient solutions.
As MyHPVScore is introduced to more patients, the lab is also developing tests for related conditions, such as HPV-positive cervical cancer. The test holds particular promise for HIV-positive and other immunocompromised individuals, who face higher risks of HPV-related cancers. Brenner hopes the lab’s success will inspire further development of innovative tests, positioning Michigan as a leader in translating research into clinical practice.
