ASU Launches Innovative Content Creation Major for Aspiring Influencers
Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication is pioneering a new educational path with the introduction of a content creation major designed for students eager to enter the world of online influencing. This initiative comes as a response to changing dynamics in the marketing and communications sectors.
According to a study by Morning Consult, over half of Generation Z expresses interest in pursuing a career as a social media influencer. This growing trend underscores the relevance of ASU’s new program.
Cronkite School’s Dean, Battinto Batts Jr., highlights the similarities between the roles of journalists and social media influencers. “The success of a journalist is very much dependent upon accuracy, facts, trust, accountability, connection to audience. That’s the same thing that’s at play here,” Batts explained.
The curriculum aims to equip students with skills to cultivate trust and engagement with online audiences. Additionally, it emphasizes the commercial aspects of content creation, including monetization strategies and analyzing performance metrics.
Students enrolled in the major will delve into building personal brands, creating websites, managing social media profiles, and developing YouTube channels, which will also extend to client-based projects, as Batts noted.
As outlined on the program’s website, graduates can look forward to career opportunities in brand storytelling, digital influencing, and podcasting, enriching the digital media landscape.
