NFL suspends Arizona Cardinals personnel executive for violating the league’s gambling policy

Amidst a tightening of rules surrounding sports betting, the NFL has taken decisive action by indefinitely suspending Ryan Gold, a key figure within the Arizona Cardinals, due to a breach of the league’s gambling policy. This move underscores the NFL’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the game.

According to the NFL’s announcement on Friday, Gold, who served as the director of college scouting for the Cardinals, was found guilty of sharing confidential draft information pertaining to the 2026 selections before they were publicly announced. Additionally, Gold engaged in parlay betting on NFL and college sports events. The specifics of who received the sensitive information remain undisclosed.

The NFL’s gambling policy is clear: “The Gambling Policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, strictly prohibits anyone in the NFL from participating in or facilitating any form of sports gambling, and from providing third parties non-public information.” The league emphasized that while there is no indication that the integrity of any games was compromised, violations of the policy are treated with grave seriousness.

The Arizona Cardinals have expressed their full support for the NFL’s decision, stating, “The NFL’s policies and expectations for all employees are clear, comprehensive, and consistently communicated. We fully support the league’s decision in this matter, which involves a single employee. Our focus remains on preparing for the start of training camp next week and the 2026 season.”

Gold, who has been with the Cardinals for 13 seasons, rose to his current position in June 2025. Prior to that, he served as the assistant director of college scouting and as a college scouting coordinator.

The NFL’s strict regulations forbid players and personnel from betting on NFL games, manipulating game outcomes, or sharing insider information. While players can legally wager on other sports under certain conditions, similar liberties are not extended to league or club staff.

The Cardinals cooperated fully with the league’s investigation, which concluded without finding any evidence that other members of the organization were involved or that game outcomes were influenced by the breach.

This incident is reminiscent of previous gambling violations in the league, with over 15 players having been suspended since 1963, the most recent being Isaiah Rodgers in June 2023.
