Residents of northern Arizona can expect a wetter summer, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service. The summer outlook predicts increased rainfall for large parts of the state, particularly in northeastern Arizona.

The report issued on April 17 indicates a 40-50% likelihood of above-average rainfall from July through September for northeastern Arizona, which includes Coconino County and sections of Yavapai and Gila counties. In other areas of the state, the chances of higher precipitation are up to 40%.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, the anticipated wet conditions follow a pattern where dry winters lead to more active monsoon seasons. This is welcome news after the region experienced unusually low precipitation during the winter and early spring.

Nonetheless, a recent update from the agency cautions that Arizona might still face a prolonged wildfire season despite the expected rainfall.

Recent heavy snow and rainfall brought by March storms have somewhat alleviated the concerns of forest officials worried about fire risk after a historically dry winter in northern Arizona.
