Oregon Man Convicted in Stalking Case Involving Government Official
In a gripping case that captured attention across state lines, an Oregon resident has been convicted of stalking charges related to a former government official in Tucson. Brian Thomas Balda faced a federal jury, which, after four days of deliberation, found him guilty of both cyberstalking and interstate stalking.
The prosecution detailed a disturbing pattern of harassment that lasted nearly a year. Balda reportedly targeted an unnamed U.S. government official with a barrage of abusive text messages and voicemails. His actions escalated when he traveled from Oregon to Arizona, allegedly intending to confront the victim. Authorities detained him near the official’s residence, where they discovered four knives, binoculars, and a replica handgun in his vehicle.
Balda’s conviction carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Sentencing has been set for September.
