In a striking move that has drawn national attention, Senator Mark Kelly and several Democratic colleagues are facing backlash after the Department of Justice’s failed attempt to indict them. This situation stems from a video they released, which encouraged military personnel to disregard unlawful orders.
Speaking at a press conference in Washington D.C., Kelly remarked, “They tried to have us charged and thrown into jail because we said something they didn’t like.” He highlighted the incident as a significant threat to democratic freedoms. “Folks, this is the master alarm flashing for our democracy. It is threatening the very foundation of our system—that we have a right to free speech, to lawfully speak out and protest our government without fear of retaliation.”
The senator attributed this legal maneuver to former President Donald Trump, accusing him of leveraging his influence to suppress dissenting voices. Kelly described the attempted indictment as characteristic of authoritarian regimes, stating, “This is a story about how hard Donald Trump and his cronies are trying to break our system in order to silence anyone who lawfully speaks out against them.”
According to a Reuters report, the DOJ aimed to indict Kelly and other lawmakers, all with military or intelligence backgrounds, under a statute that prohibits undermining the loyalty, morale, or discipline of the armed forces.
The ABC News and the New York Times disclosed that the indictment attempt was sanctioned by Jeanine Pirro, then U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
As a retired Navy captain, Kelly expressed his outrage over the investigation, calling it an “outrageous abuse of power.” Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has censured Kelly and is attempting to demote him retroactively. Kelly is currently pursuing legal action to prevent this demotion, with a judge’s decision anticipated soon.
