Sonora Leads Mexico in Heat-Related Fatalities Amid Rising Temperatures

Sonora has emerged as the state with the highest number of heat-related deaths in Mexico this year, highlighting the severe impact of extreme temperatures in the region.

This year, the state of Sonora has witnessed 25 fatalities due to heat-related conditions, surpassing the figures in Baja California, which reported eight deaths, the second highest in the country.

In Sonora, almost all the deaths were attributed to heat stroke, as the region experienced relentless heat waves with temperatures frequently exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This trend is expected to continue, with forecasts predicting temperatures to climb over 105 degrees Fahrenheit in Hermosillo, the state’s capital, later this week.

As temperatures continue to rise, experts and environmental advocates in Hermosillo are pressing local authorities to increase the number of green spaces. This initiative aims to counteract the urban heat island effect and help the city adapt to the evolving climate conditions effectively.
