Community Meetings Address School Consolidation Challenges in Tucson
The Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) is actively engaging with the community through a series of meetings to explore the potential for school consolidations or closures. This initiative arises from a significant decrease in student enrollment, a trend observed statewide.
Originally established to accommodate over 67,000 students, TUSD’s current enrollment has dropped to below 40,000, prompting a need for strategic adjustments. During a recent meeting, Bill de la Cruz, serving as the facilitator, highlighted the financial strain of maintaining underutilized schools. He noted, “When we talked to the principals, they talked to us about schools that leak when it rains. They talked about portables that have holes in the floors and so when we have so many buildings, it’s hard to do the infrastructure repairs that are needed to keep these buildings in top shape.”
De la Cruz emphasized the district’s preference for allocating funds toward enhancing student programs rather than repairing outdated facilities. Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo reinforced this approach, stressing the importance of ensuring full-time staff availability for students. He remarked, “It’s a very, very painful moment and we want to acknowledge that. But it’s for the righteous cause, the pursuit of excellence in educational experiences for all of our students and to build a better, stronger, more sustainable district going forward.”
