In the upcoming midterm election, Michigan voters face a pivotal decision as they select a new U.S. Senator. This election will determine who fills the vacancy left by Democratic U.S. Senator Gary Peters.

Michigan Public is conducting interviews with the candidates vying for this position. A discussion with Libertarian Lydia Christensen will be available soon. However, attempts to reach Republican candidate Mike Rogers have been unsuccessful.

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate, recently shared his views with Stateside host April Baer.

Economic Policy and Everyday Costs

During the interview, Abdul El-Sayed emphasized several legislative priorities aimed at alleviating financial burdens for Michigan residents:

  • Passing a War Powers Resolution to halt what he describes as an illegal war, which he believes is inflating gas and grocery prices.
  • Challenging monopolistic corporations that suppress wages and inflate prices.
  • Aligning wage growth with rising prices, advocating for union empowerment through the PRO Act.
  • Eliminating tariffs on Canadian goods that he claims increase costs by approximately $5,600 per person.

Job Market and Union Empowerment

El-Sayed highlighted the need to support unionization as a remedy for the limited job market options in industries like healthcare:

“Too often what’s happening now is that you have a few corporations that dominate any given industry,” he explained, discussing the impact of corporate consolidation on wages and employment choices.

He also criticized the trend of subsidizing large corporations for job creation without substantial results, advocating instead for increased investment in small businesses and local entrepreneurship.

Executive Power and Legislative Balance

On the topic of executive power, El-Sayed called for more stringent limits:

“It’s about whether or not people in Congress are willing to take their power,” he stated, stressing the importance of Congress reclaiming its authority to maintain a check on executive actions, especially in the context of the Trump administration.

Immigration and Law Enforcement

El-Sayed voiced strong opinions on immigration policies, advocating for the abolition of ICE:

“We need to abolish ICE,” he argued, criticizing the agency’s enforcement methods. He proposed a more constitutionally consistent approach to immigration enforcement, focusing on safety and security at the southern border, and establishing a clear path to citizenship.

Gun Legislation and Public Safety

Discussing firearm regulation, El-Sayed identified several measures he supports:

  • Restricting access to certain firearms designed for rapid mass harm.
  • Implementing universal background checks and red flag laws.
  • Investing in Community Violence Intervention to reduce gun violence in urban areas.

Approaching gun violence as a public health issue, he emphasized collaboration between gun owners and non-owners to protect communities.
