Military Veteran Enters Race for Michigan’s 8th Congressional District
Amir Hassan, a newcomer to the political arena and a former federal law enforcement officer, has officially announced his candidacy for Michigan’s 8th Congressional District. This marks the first Republican bid to contest the seat currently held by Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet.
Hassan, who hails from Flint, made his announcement through a video, where he criticized the long-standing Democratic presence in the district which covers Flint, Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland.
In the video, Hassan stated, “Where I’m from, we’re raised to think Democrats are the good guys. We’ve been held culturally hostage for over half a century. But look around. Flint is what happens when your vote is taken for granted.”
The district has been under Democratic representation since 1973, following then-Republican Don Riegle’s switch to the Democratic Party due to disagreements with the Nixon-Agnew administration over the Vietnam War. The area has been predominantly represented by Dale Kildee and later his nephew Dan Kildee for much of the past fifty years.
The seat has become increasingly competitive, especially since former state Senator Kristen McDonald Rivet narrowly secured the position in 2024 following Dan Kildee’s retirement. Since her induction in January, McDonald Rivet has faced a series of attack ads from conservative groups.
