Corewell Health Resumes Hormone Therapy for Minors Amid Legal Concerns
Corewell Health has resumed initiating hormone therapy for individuals under nineteen after a temporary pause. This development follows the issuance of an executive order by former President Donald Trump, which prohibited federal funding for gender-affirming care for transgender minors.
A spokesperson for Corewell Health explained that the initial suspension of new hormone therapy cases was a precautionary step to evaluate how the executive order might impact their patients and the broader community. However, they emphasized that this pause did not signify a complete cessation of gender-affirming care services for any patient.
In a statement released last week, Corewell Health clarified, “We are monitoring the changes happening with the federal government and working to understand how the changes will impact our patients, team members and communities we serve.” This cautious approach was in response to the potential legal implications of the federal directive.
The issue took a significant turn when Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a warning to healthcare providers in Michigan. Nessel highlighted that discontinuing gender-affirming care for minors could be interpreted as discrimination under state law, prompting Corewell Health to reassess their stance.
While the health system did not disclose whether the suspension was exclusive to transgender patients, they reiterated their commitment to patient care, stating, “Care decisions are best made between physicians and their patients and families.”
The executive order in question forms part of a broader effort to retract federal funding initiatives under previous administrations. Notably, several federal judges have intervened by placing temporary restraining orders on such executive actions, pending judicial review of their legality.
