Detroit Mayor Considers Running Mate Options in Gubernatorial Bid
Detroit’s Mayor Mike Duggan is actively exploring potential running mates as he advances his independent campaign for the governorship. Despite the ongoing search, Duggan has expressed no immediate urgency to finalize his choice for a lieutenant governor candidate.
During an appearance on the Michigan Public Television public affairs program “Off The Record,” Duggan remarked, “I’m going to pick the most talented person, and at this point, I don’t have a particular candidate in mind, but I’m meeting people every day in different parts of the state.”
Having filed the necessary nominating petitions, Duggan’s name is already secured on the ballot as an independent candidate, marking a significant shift from his long-standing association with the Democratic Party.
The mayor noted a strong interest from notable individuals keen on joining an independent ticket. However, he has until September to submit the name of his chosen running mate to the state.
Emphasizing the qualities he seeks, Duggan stated, “Somebody who is honest, who is competent, who says what they mean, commands respect, has an accomplishment in life that people can say, yeah, we are going to end politics as usual.”
