Former Staffers Turn Lobbyists in Rep. Huizenga’s Office
A pattern of switching roles from congressional staff to lobbyists is evident in the office of Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga. Since 2011, Huizenga has served Michigan’s 4th District and is currently seeking a ninth term in office.
Several individuals who have worked under Huizenga have transitioned into lobbying roles, representing industries such as finance, insurance, and pharmaceuticals. This movement between public office and the private sector is often criticized for potential conflicts of interest, termed as revolving-door politics.
Among these individuals is Jon DeWitte, Huizenga’s chief of staff for over ten years, who moved to Travelers Insurance in 2022 as a lobbyist and vice president of government affairs. Travelers has since lobbied Congress on various issues, including health care and insurance.
Another former staffer, Marlis McManus, who served as deputy chief of staff, is now lobbying for Vanguard, focusing on investment funds and equity markets. McManus has previously worked as a lobbyist before joining Huizenga’s team.
Other former aides have also joined the lobbying sector, including Palmer Rafferty with TransUnion and Martin Van Valkenburg, who lobbied for an aerospace company. These companies are subject to oversight from congressional committees, such as the Financial Services Committee, on which Huizenga serves.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee views Huizenga as one of the Republicans most at risk in the upcoming election, with state Sen. Sean McCann as his Democratic contender.
