Huizenga’s wealth grew as he skipped community project funding for Michigan district

Article Summary –

Michigan Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga has significantly increased his personal wealth while serving in Congress, tripling his assets and increasing his net worth up to five times since taking office 15 years ago, as shown in his financial disclosures from 2011 and 2025. Despite his personal financial growth, he has not requested federal earmarks for his district, arguing against the use of earmarks due to potential abuse and increased spending, even as other Michigan representatives secured $205 million for local projects. Huizenga’s wealth largely comes from stocks, mutual funds, and his co-owned business, Huizenga Gravel Company, with substantial assets in real estate and gravel mining operations, and he is currently running for reelection without facing any Republican primary challengers.

Michigan Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga has significantly increased his personal wealth during his congressional tenure, despite not seeking federal funds for district projects.

According to 2011 and 2025 financial disclosures, Huizenga’s assets have tripled, and his net worth has grown fivefold since taking office 15 years ago. Initially, Huizenga reported assets worth $437,015 to $1,058,000 and a net worth of $172,015 to $947,998. By 2025, his assets were between $1,355,024 and $3,056,000, with a net worth ranging from $885,000 to $2,805,999.

The Detroit News highlighted Huizenga’s lack of earmark requests for his district, where 12% of residents live below the poverty line. Representing Michigan’s 4th Congressional District, Huizenga’s region includes Allegan, Van Buren, and parts of Berrien, Calhoun, Kalamazoo, and Ottawa counties.

While other representatives secured $205 million for around 160 projects for the 2026 fiscal year, Huizenga abstained, citing potential misuse of earmarks as his reason. “Never have. And I won’t,” he stated, criticizing the process.

Huizenga’s wealth includes stocks, mutual funds, and significant income from Huizenga Gravel Company, Inc. in Jenison. His latest disclosure shows profits from gravel mining and land ownership valued between $700,003 and $1,500,000, with an income of $115,002 to $1,050,000. Additionally, he owns real estate in Holland worth $500,001 to $1,000,000.

Currently seeking reelection, Huizenga faces no Republican primary challengers as per the Federal Election Commission. State Sen. Sean McCann, endorsed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and other Democrats, including Jessica Swartz, Diop Harris, and Richard Aaron, are in the race.

In a social media post dated Dec. 15, 2025, Huizenga announced his campaign, stating, “Our work to make Southwest Michigan an even better place to call home isn’t finished!”
