Jocelyn Benson Garners Support from First Responders and Veterans in Michigan
In a significant political development in Warren, Michigan, gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson secured endorsements from prominent groups of first responders and veterans, highlighting her influence and appeal within these communities.
Among her endorsers was National Security Leaders for America, with Retired Marine Corps Major General Michael Lehnert leading the organization’s efforts in Michigan. Lehnert praised Benson’s performance as the state’s secretary of state, emphasizing her commitment to fair elections. “Jocelyn Benson has been tasked with the statewide responsibility of ensuring that every qualified voter’s vote counts, and she has discharged that duty with competence and integrity,” Lehnert remarked.
The Michigan Professional Firefighters Union (MPFFU) also declared their support for Benson. MPFFU President Matt Sahr attributed their endorsement to economic concerns, criticizing Benson’s opponent for policies perceived to increase living costs. “Her opponent is lining up behind the agenda that would drive up prices, health care coverage for working people, and make life more expensive for everyone,” Sahr stated, further noting, “John James even voted against the measure to end the war in Iran last week, at a time when gas prices were at an all-time high.”
The event, held at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 124, occurred against a backdrop of divided endorsements within the law enforcement community. The statewide Fraternal Order of Police and the Police Officers Association of Michigan endorsed Benson’s Republican rival, Congressman John James.
U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) attended the event, voicing concerns about rising energy costs and their economic impact. “Talk to anyone in manufacturing, anyone in trucking. I mean, it is a huge drag on the economy,” Slotkin commented. She suggested that addressing the ongoing war in Iran should be a priority, expressing skepticism about current strategies. “I think it’s a little hard for the president of the United States, who started this war without a plan to get out of it, drove prices through the roof, to now pretend to be the hero. You can’t be both the arsonist and the firefighter,” Slotkin said.
The White House has considered various measures to alleviate fuel costs, including a potential suspension of the fuel tax or ending diesel exports, adding another dimension to the economic discussions surrounding the gubernatorial race.
