Over 500 employees at the University of Michigan (U-M) are integrating well-being into daily work life. These dedicated individuals, including a Michigan Medicine Parking and Transportation customer service representative, a School of Music, Theatre & Dance lecturer, and a registered nurse at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, are part of an initiative to promote health across U-M’s campuses and Michigan Medicine.

Known as MHealthy Champions, these volunteers foster connections, share wellness resources, and contribute to healthier work environments. Employees can apply to become champions now through July 31, with eligibility extending to all active, benefits-eligible staff, whether working on-site, remotely, or in hybrid roles.

“MHealthy Champions directly improve individual, team and university well-being, enhance work environments and enrich our communities,” said Karen Schmidt, senior director of Health and Well-being Services at MHealthy. The initiative aligns with U-M’s latest theme year under the Look to Michigan campaign, focusing on Human Health and Well-being.

Doris Anyim, a registered nurse at Mott, joined as a champion to enhance both personal wellness and patient care. “The spark that ignited me wanting to become an MHealthy Champion is because I really wanted to improve patient outcomes,” said Anyim.

Champions devote one to two hours monthly over a two-year term. With MHealthy’s support and their supervisor’s approval, they:

  • Collaborate with MHealthy to customize activities.
  • Support health and well-being goals in their areas.
  • Promote participation in wellness activities.
  • Foster connections in the workplace.
  • Complete steps to qualify for event funding.

They receive assistance from:

  • A dedicated MHealthy Wellness Coordinator for setting wellness goals.
  • Expert-led learning opportunities covering diverse well-being topics.
  • An online portal for training, educational resources, and peer networking.

To apply for the MHealthy Champion role, employees must submit applications by July 31. MHealthy will reach out to the candidate’s supervisor for necessary approval.
