Michigan Explores Potential of Geologic Hydrogen as a Clean Energy Source
Amid a global push for sustainable energy, Michigan is turning its attention to the promising potential of geologic hydrogen, a clean energy source buried deep underground. This quest is driven by the unique geological features of the state, which make it an ideal candidate for discovering this carbon-free gas.
The formation of geologic hydrogen occurs under specific conditions, such as the interaction of water with iron-rich rocks or exposure to the radioactive decay of certain minerals. Michigan’s landscape, lying atop the Mid-Continent Rift, harbors the geological formations that could potentially encapsulate this elusive energy source.
To advance this exploration, Michigan is investing $7.5 million in research and drilling initiatives. This funding follows Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s 2026 executive order to create the “Michigan Geologic Hydrogen Exploration and Preparedness Initiative,” aimed at tapping into this untapped resource.
Brian Ellis, an associate professor at the University of Michigan and co-director of MI Hydrogen, highlights the speculative yet promising nature of this field. He states, “This is a good time to be making investments in this science, trying to figure out whether Michigan really has the resource potentially existing below our feet, and can we go out and find it.”
The initiative could have far-reaching implications, potentially providing a new carbon-free energy source to power transportation and manufacturing, crucial sectors in the move towards a sustainable future.
