Countdown to Election Day: Candidates Intensify Efforts in Michigan’s 8th District
With only two weeks left until the November general election, political candidates are fervently working to convey their final messages to voters. The race in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District, which encompasses areas from Flint to Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland, is particularly critical as it is considered a pivotal swing district.
Incumbent Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet is striving for re-election to secure a second term in Congress. During an event in Flint, she engaged with groups advocating the reversal of recent changes to Obamacare, Medicaid, and Medicare.
McDonald Rivet emphasized the need for reforms in healthcare access, stating that the current “status quo” in Washington is unsatisfactory. She expressed urgency in reducing costs and ensuring universal health insurance coverage, while also addressing the impact of global conflicts on fuel prices. “We actually need to very quickly figure out how to bring down costs, make sure everybody has health insurance, we have to end this war so that our gas prices drop and our diesel prices drop,” she remarked.
Meanwhile, Republican contender Tom Smith criticized McDonald Rivet during a GOP Get-Out-The-Vote rally in Birch Run. Smith accused the incumbent of failing to truly represent the interests of her constituents in mid-Michigan. “Someone that betrays and doesn’t even know the voters they represent does not deserve a second term,” Smith declared to his supporters.
Smith has built his campaign around key issues that resonate with the local population, emphasizing the importance of “safe communities, low cost, great jobs,” which he described as integral to achieving the “Great American Dream.” He highlighted his grassroots approach, noting that “Everybody wants a piece of the Great American Dream” as he connects with voters door-to-door.
Despite her opponent’s attacks, McDonald Rivet remains focused on her agenda of lowering healthcare costs and expanding access. She stated, “There’s a real agenda that’s important to people and we built this gigantic coalition across the district to try to get that done. I don’t know what he’s doing, but we’re focused on those things.”
