A recent health alert in Oakland County has raised concerns about the spread of measles following the confirmation of a pediatric case. This case marks the second instance of the disease in the area this year, as announced by the county’s health department.
Measles is notably infectious and can be prevented through vaccination. Transmission occurs through direct contact or airborne particles. Health officials are currently tracing individuals who might have been exposed to this latest case, especially those present at DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital’s emergency department on December 7.
For those who suspect they may have been exposed, vigilance for symptoms is advised. These symptoms include:
- High fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red and watery eyes
- White spots on the inner cheeks, gums, and roof of the mouth 2-3 days after symptoms begin
- Rash that is red, raised, blotchy; typically starting on the face and spreading to the trunk, arms, and legs 3-5 days after symptoms begin
The Oakland County Health Department urges individuals to contact healthcare providers in advance if symptoms develop, whether visiting general practitioners, urgent care clinics, or emergency departments.
Measles can remain airborne and infectious for up to two hours after an infected person has coughed or sneezed. Symptoms generally appear 7-14 days post-exposure, but they can manifest up to 21 days later.
Kate Guzman, Oakland County health officer, emphasized, “Vaccination is the most effective tool we have to prevent the spread of measles. The measles (MMR) vaccine helps protect our community’s most vulnerable which includes infants, children with medical conditions, and others who cannot be vaccinated.”
This year’s measles cases in Oakland County have been connected to travel both within the United States and internationally. Statewide, Michigan has confirmed 30 measles cases so far, according to a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson.
