Pharmacy and Medicine Staff Win 2024 Candace J. Johnson Award

Staff from the College of Pharmacy and Michigan Medicine have been honored with the 2024 Candace J. Johnson Award for Staff Excellence. This accolade recognizes remarkable excellence, generosity, and compassion in the workplace. The award is presented by the Office of the Provost with support from Johnson’s family and friends, commemorating the legacy of Candace J. Johnson, a devoted U-M staff member. Award recipients are selected for their outstanding contributions, diligence, and inspiring influence within their work environments.

The distinguished awardees are:

  • Holly Jablonski, associate director of administrative operations, College of Pharmacy.
  • Janet Santos, occupational therapist and clinical specialist, Michigan Medicine.

Each will be awarded $1,500 and a plaque in private ceremonies later this semester.

Jablonski, with nine years at the College of Pharmacy, began as an executive secretary and now serves as associate director for administrative services. Her colleagues noted her management of high-priority projects and training sessions for new staff. She also led the project for the college’s new building, ensuring inclusivity. Regina McClinton praised Jablonski’s invaluable support during her transition to U-M, highlighting her assistance with both small tasks and significant responsibilities.

Numerous colleagues admire Jablonski’s dedication and work ethic. Vicki Ellingrod, dean and John Gideon Searle Professor of Pharmacy, remarked on Jablonski’s role in organizing the college’s research forum, emphasizing her ability to manage details and foster a positive event atmosphere.

Janet Santos

Santos, a pediatric occupational therapist at Michigan Medicine for 15 years, shines as a clinical specialist at the Briarwood Pediatric Rehabilitation Center. Her excellence as a therapist and mentor is lauded, particularly in the Constrained Hand and Arm Movement Program for patients with hemiplegia. Dubbed the “Queen of Casting,” Santos has helped many achieve better arm function through innovative therapy methods.

Colleagues noted her ability to create a supportive therapy environment, and parents of young patients praised her compassion and honesty. Laura Opie, another occupational therapist, expressed gratitude for Santos’s mentorship, stating it significantly enhanced her patient care abilities.
