Michigan’s Palisades Nuclear Plant Eyes Revival

The Palisades nuclear power plant in West Michigan, dormant since 2022, is on the cusp of a groundbreaking revival. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has indicated that the plant, a subject of intense debate, could resume operations by the end of November. This marks a significant milestone in the nuclear sector.

Originally shut down by its former owner, Entergy, Palisades was sold to Holtec International for decommissioning. The plant first began generating electricity in 1971. However, before the decommissioning process could fully commence, successive U.S. administrations have championed its revival. To support this, the Department of Energy (DOE) has extended $1.52 billion in loan guarantees.

Michigan’s political sphere, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and other state legislators, has shown strong support for the restart. Wright, after visiting the plant, revealed that only a few tests and regulatory approvals remain. “You got to be very careful for safety in Michigan and nuclear in general,” he noted, highlighting the meticulous nature of the work, which is progressing well.

The plant’s restart, however, has faced prior delays. Operated by Holtec International, located in Camden, New Jersey, the company plans a gradual escalation from low to full power over several weeks once they receive clearance from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Holtec CEO Kris Singh described the restart as a herald of a “nuclear renaissance,” asserting, “It will be better than a new plant and it will have another 50 years.” The plant’s current license is valid until 2031. Singh envisions a successful restart catalyzing global interest in nuclear energy.

Despite these ambitions, the plant faces opposition. Critics, such as Kevin Kamps of Don’t Waste Michigan, express concerns over the plant’s safety. Kamps warned, “Once they restart this zombie reactor, all bets are off,” voicing fears of potential risks and financial wastage.

In a recent development, after overcoming an unexpected issue in August, fuel assemblies were successfully reloaded into the reactor earlier this month. The journey to restart Palisades continues, with eyes on regulatory clearance and a safe path forward.
