Democratic Race Expands in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District
In a bid to challenge the Republican hold on Michigan’s 4th congressional district, Democratic State Senator Sean McCann has declared his candidacy. His entry into the race signals a growing field of Democratic hopefuls aiming to unseat GOP Congressman Bill Huizenga in 2026.
McCann, who has been a fixture in Kalamazoo politics for over a decade, is transitioning from his role in the state Senate to pursue a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. His campaign announcement on Monday marks his official entry into the Democratic primary.
Throughout his political career, McCann has represented the Kalamazoo area, serving as both a state representative and state senator. Prior to his state-level service, he dedicated a decade to the Kalamazoo City Commission, building a strong local presence.
His campaign platform focuses on economic relief, women’s rights, and job creation, emphasizing his commitment to Michigan families. “I’ll keep fighting to get your costs down, protect your Social Security and health care, and take on the special interests to actually get things done for working people,” McCann stated in his campaign kickoff.
McCann joins three other Democrats in the 2026 race: Diop Harris, a former congressional staffer; Richard Aaron, a cybersecurity expert; and Jessica Swartz, an attorney who previously faced Huizenga in the 2024 election.
Despite the Democratic Party’s ambitions to flip this southwestern Michigan seat, the Cook Political Report categorizes the district as “Likely Republican” for the upcoming election cycle.
