WASHINGTON — U.S. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries urged support from the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) during their national convention, emphasizing a Democratic majority’s potential impact on progressive policies. Jeffries, addressing a crowd in Washington, D.C., highlighted key issues like affordability and voting rights. He also criticized “the most corrupt administration in American history,” drawing personal connections by sharing his upbringing in a union family. Acknowledging the significant role of organized labor, he praised the contributions of public employees and their unions.

The AFT, representing 1.8 million educators, healthcare workers, and public employees, plays a pivotal role in supporting Democrats. Its political action committee contributed over $1.9 million to Democratic candidates, according to Open Secrets. Jeffries encouraged members to help secure a Democratic majority in the House, which could see him as the next House speaker.

Campaign promises

House Democrats, Jeffries stated, would counter “MAGA extremists” and protect Social Security and Medicare. They aim to reduce childcare and healthcare costs. Jeffries committed to tackling corruption within the Trump administration and addressing the war with Iran. He criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for being “completely and totally out of control,” referencing recent fatal shootings by ICE officers in Maine and Texas.

Spotlight on education

Senator Raphael Warnock highlighted public education’s crucial role in his life, attributing his success to supportive parents, teachers, and financial aid like Pell grants. Warnock expressed concern over limited opportunities for today’s children, which could reduce future leaders in critical fields. He advocated for increased teacher pay and other supportive measures.

State of the union

AFT President Randi Weingarten addressed income inequality and the influence of big tech in her speech. She emphasized the union’s commitment to democracy through education and voting. Weingarten warned that the upcoming election will shape the nation’s governance and opportunities. Meanwhile, House Republicans advanced measures to dismantle the Department of Education, aiming to redistribute its duties, which Weingarten criticized for undermining public education and teacher support.
