Adriana Guzmán Fralick’s Political Ambitions Shaped by Healthcare Debate
Adriana Guzmán Fralick, the Republican candidate for Nevada’s attorney general position, has cited her opposition to the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, as a significant factor driving her political aspirations.
Fralick’s experience with health care legislation began during her tenure as general counsel for Republican Governor Jim Gibbons from 2009 to 2011. During this period, the governor’s administration initiated several legal challenges against Obamacare, despite resistance from the state’s Democratic attorney general at the time, Catherine Cortez Masto.
Speaking on Newsmakers on August 25, Fralick shared that this period was her introduction to the responsibilities of an attorney general. “We had to deal with Obamacare at the time and we really needed to get to the bottom of it and figure out how it was going to affect Nevadans,” she explained. “We had an attorney general who felt differently than we did. That’s when I reached out to outside counsel and we started these lawsuits with the administration. That was my first experience with that and it kind of planted a seed that it may be something I would one day want to do.”
The impact of Obamacare in Nevada is notable, with over 104,000 residents receiving health insurance through the program. According to a KFF poll conducted in July, 51% of voters nationwide highlighted health care costs as a critical issue for candidates in the current electoral cycle, with 36% wanting discussions on the future of Obamacare specifically.
Governor Gibbons, under whom Fralick served, faced criticism during his term and was listed among the 11 worst U.S. governors by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington in 2010. Subsequently, he failed to secure his party’s nomination for reelection.
Fralick’s background also includes a stint on the board of Nevada Health Centers, a nonprofit organization providing health services statewide, from 2011 to 2020. During her tenure, the organization faced financial difficulties, with the CEO’s salary significantly increasing while the organization operated at a loss and reduced its obstetrics services.
In the upcoming election, Fralick will be facing Democratic state Senator Nicole Cannizzaro. A spokesperson for Fralick chose not to comment on these developments.
