Linde Inc.’s New Facility to Boost Northampton County’s Economy

Raleigh, N.C. — In a significant development for Northampton County, Linde Inc., a prominent player in the industrial gases and engineering sector, is set to create 20 new jobs with a substantial investment exceeding $75 million. The investment will finance the construction of an air separation facility in Garysburg.

Governor Josh Stein emphasized the state’s competitive edge by welcoming Linde, stating, “I am pleased to welcome Linde to Northampton County. Not only is North Carolina centrally located on the East Coast with the strong transportation infrastructure that manufacturers and distributors need, but, more importantly, it’s also home to the talented North Carolinians who helped secure our ranking as the top state for workforce development.”

Specializing in the production and distribution of industrial gases, Linde will generate argon, nitrogen, and oxygen at this new plant. These gases cater to diverse industries, including healthcare, food and beverage, electronics, and chemicals, addressing needs ranging from hospital services to food preservation, semiconductor manufacturing, and battery production. Located within the Northampton County Commerce Park, the facility will facilitate direct distribution to its clients.

Todd Lawson, Vice President of the East Region, highlighted strategic factors influencing Linde’s decision, asserting, “We chose this location based on its proximity to customers and the support of Northampton County. This new air separation unit will strengthen Linde’s presence in the state and extend our strong merchant gases supply network to increase our ability to reliably serve our customers’ current and future needs.”

Notably, N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley remarked on the broader implications of Linde’s move, saying, “Linde’s decision to build in Northampton County validates the community’s resilience and strength. Companies like Linde grow the supply chain of our thriving life sciences ecosystem, and when they choose rural North Carolina, they affirm North Carolina’s position as the best place for business in every corner of the state.”

The new positions at Linde’s facility could potentially inject over $1.75 million annually into the local economy through payroll impacts.

Growth in North Carolina is further supported by a $60,000 performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund. This fund aids local governments in attracting economic investment and job creation. Companies receive financial assistance only upon meeting specific job creation and investment criteria, and grants require local government participation.

North Carolina Representative Rodney D. Pierce expressed readiness to assist, noting, “We welcome Linde and its investments in our people and our community, and we stand ready to support the company as it executes its growth strategy.”

Echoing this optimism, N.C. Senator Bobby Hanig remarked, “This is outstanding news that will be a great return on investment for Northampton County and the region. I am proud of the diligent work of our local and state officials, and I appreciate our economic developers and regional partners for their efforts that brought the project to fruition.”

This project has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, the North Carolina General Assembly, and other regional partners like the Golden LEAF Foundation and Dominion Energy.
