Democratic state legislators have issued a formal appeal to President Donald Trump, asking him to reconsider the tariff policy enacted a year ago. The policy, which was supposed to revive American manufacturing, has instead been criticized for its detrimental impact on the economy.
April 2 was marked as “Liberation Day” by Trump, who introduced tariffs affecting 90 countries, with the assurance of job creation and manufacturing growth in the U.S. However, legislators argue in their letter that these tariffs have instead stripped their constituents of financial security and employment.
Tariffs function as taxes on imports, affecting American companies who often transfer these costs to consumers via increased prices. According to a Tax Foundation report, retail prices saw a 7% increase last year due to these tariffs, impacting items like cars, clothes, toys, and furniture.
The tariffs have been legally contested, and in February, the U.S. Supreme Court declared the legal basis for these tariffs as unlawful, though it left open the possibility for them to be reintroduced through alternative methods (source).
This constantly shifting tariff landscape, with some tariffs being lifted and new ones introduced, has created confusion for businesses and consumers alike. The letter highlights the job losses in the manufacturing sector, noting a decrease in employment every month until December. The economic growth slowed significantly, with GDP growth at 1.4% in the last quarter of 2025.
Economists suggest that these tariffs have worsened an already critical affordability crisis, driven by persistent inflation and corporate profit-seeking. This situation has been further strained by rising gas prices, which exceeded $4 a gallon following the U.S. invasion of Iran last month.
The legislators urge Trump to annul the tariffs, reimburse the costs to Americans, and focus on affordability, especially for working families. “It’s not too late to change course and finally focus on what Americans actually care about,” states the letter.
Signatories of the letter include representatives from various states like Maryland, New Hampshire, Illinois, Iowa, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Texas, Minnesota, and Michigan. Maryland Rep. Adrian Boafo, who is running for Congress, is among those who signed the letter.
