A recent claim from the Trump administration incorrectly suggested that Janelle Stelson’s campaign hired an undocumented immigrant facing charges of indecent exposure.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement on October 7 detailing the arrest of Chimaobim Adedayo Igbojekwe, a Nigerian residing in Pennsylvania. The announcement mistakenly labeled him as a “canvasser for congressional candidate Janelle Stelson” in its opening sentence.
Federal candidates are obligated to disclose all paid campaign staff in their financial reports. Igbojekwe’s name was absent from any filings related to Stelson’s campaign.
In response, Stelson’s campaign promptly clarified their position, stating they have no connection to Igbojekwe.
“This individual is not and has never been employed by the Janelle Stelson campaign,” confirmed campaign manager Alma Baker. “If he is an illegal immigrant who committed a crime he should be deported. We never heard of him prior to the news of his arrest. We are grateful to law enforcement for acting swiftly to arrest him.”
The origin of the White House’s erroneous claim remains unclear. Nonetheless, various far-right figures, including LibsOfTikTok and Benny Johnson, rapidly disseminated the misinformation on social media.
The DHS release cited “local reporting” as the basis for Igbojekwe’s alleged association with the Stelson campaign. However, this information is unfounded. The source is Shore News Network, a media outlet with a conservative leaning, which attributes its report to Scott Pressler, a far-right activist unaffiliated with any official entity.
Janelle Stelson is running against Republican Representative Scott Perry in Pennsylvania’s 10th District, a race viewed as one of the most competitive in the 2026 congressional elections.
