Article Summary –

Governor Josh Shapiro and his family evacuated their mansion after Cody Balmer set it on fire using gasoline-filled beer bottles, leading to charges of attempted murder and other offenses. During a press conference, Shapiro condemned the rise of political violence in the U.S., stating that such acts are unacceptable regardless of their source, and highlighted previous high-profile cases of political violence. Despite the attack, Shapiro reaffirmed his commitment to serving Pennsylvania and celebrating his faith proudly, while both state and potential federal charges await Balmer.

Just hours after celebrating Passover on April 12 with a seder at the governor’s mansion, Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family evacuated early Sunday when a fire erupted. Police report that Cody Balmer, 38, breached the estate’s security, igniting the fire using gasoline-filled beer bottles.

Balmer faces charges including attempted murder, aggravated arson, and terrorism, according to the Dauphin County DA. Police were tipped off by Balmer’s ex-partner, who claimed he confessed. Balmer admitted to harboring animosity toward Shapiro, intending harm with a hammer if encountered.

The Shapiro family was alerted by a state trooper at 2 a.m., allowing them, their children, dogs, and guests to escape unharmed. The fire severely damaged their Susquehanna riverfront home, including the area where Passover was celebrated.

“Last night’s attack targeted not just our family but all of Pennsylvania,” Shapiro stated at a press conference. “Your prayers lift us, choosing light in darkness.”

Shapiro condemned rising political violence, as researchers note its increase in the U.S. over years.

“This violence is unacceptable,” Shapiro declared. “It transcends party lines. We must be better.”

Other political violence includes assassination attempts on Donald Trump in 2024, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s 2020 kidnapping plot, and the 2022 attack on Paul Pelosi.

Emotional at the press conference, Shapiro said his family was deeply impacted. “Trying to terrorize us, our friends, and the Jewish community failed. We celebrated our faith proudly and will do so again,” he asserted. “Pennsylvanians will not be deterred from openly celebrating their faith.”

Shapiro thanked Pennsylvanians for the honor of serving as governor, promising dedication to his role while supporting his family through this trauma.

The criminal complaint details Balmer’s actions, using gasoline from a lawn mower and scaling the mansion’s fence, evading state troopers. He smashed windows with a hammer and threw Molotov cocktails inside. Balmer fled the scene but is under investigation for potential federal charges, according to DA Francis Chardo.
