Hinson Prioritizes Fundraising Over Key Defense Votes

Representative Ashley Hinson of Iowa was absent from crucial House votes due to her involvement in a fundraising event for her Senate campaign.
On June 24, as the House Appropriations Committee deliberated on 11 amendments to the 2027 Defense Appropriations bill, a significant legislative piece for Pentagon funding, Hinson, a committee member, missed seven votes.
An internal email from Grand Valley Consulting, a firm advising Republican candidates, revealed Hinson’s commitment to a fundraising luncheon with West Virginia Senator Shelly Moore Capito on the same day. Ticket prices for this fundraiser ranged from $1,000 to $2,500.
Progressive outlet MidasTouch circulated a video capturing Hinson’s entrance to the event during active voting sessions.
Among the missed votes were discussions on national security, including budgetary allocations for the Defense Department, potential troop withdrawals from Europe, and amendments regarding military officer promotions.
Critics have accused Hinson of neglecting her legislative responsibilities in favor of her Senate campaign. Despite pledging more engagement, she has not conducted any town hall meetings this year but has actively participated in campaign-related events.
Hinson is a candidate seeking to succeed retiring Republican Senator Joni Ernst and will compete against Democratic state Representative Josh Turek in the upcoming general election.
A recent New York Times/Siena University poll indicated Hinson’s slight lead over Turek, with a margin of 2 points.
