Max Miller’s Campaign Ad Under Scrutiny for Misrepresenting Opponent’s Policies
A recent advertisement from Republican Representative Max Miller has sparked controversy by inaccurately portraying the political positions of his Democratic challenger, Brian Poindexter, particularly on taxation and health care reform.
In the ad, constituents from Ohio’s 7th District label Poindexter as a “socialist,” alleging his advocacy for “higher taxes” and “government-run health care.” However, these assertions do not align with Poindexter’s actual policy stances.
The advertisement cites a town hall from August, where Poindexter discussed his views on a Medicare for All proposal. While Poindexter expressed support for universal health coverage, he emphasized the need to evaluate any proposed legislation’s impact on Ohio residents before endorsing it.
“If it’s just like Medicare for all starting tomorrow and it’s just like instituted and now we got to figure it out on a whim,” Poindexter stated, “I don’t know if I could support that.”
In an interview with The Atlantic in July, Poindexter reiterated his goal of moving towards Medicare for All, while clarifying his opposition to the immediate implementation of a single-payer health care system.
The claim regarding Poindexter’s stance on higher taxes is similarly misleading. The ad references a 2020 tax levy Poindexter supported while serving on the Brook Park City Council. This levy, approved by nearly 60% of Cuyahoga County voters, imposed a minimal cost of less than $3 per month on most households to maintain library services during the COVID-19 crisis.
In 2023, Poindexter also voted in favor of placing a tax levy renewal on the city ballot, which garnered over 63% support from voters and provided funding for the Southwest General Health Center.
Ironically, the Southwest General Health Center might face a $4.5 million financial shortfall due to Medicaid reductions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a piece of legislation backed by Miller.
Max Miller, who gained a congressional seat in 2022 and retained it in 2024, now faces increased electoral challenges. Contributing factors include domestic abuse allegations from his former spouse.
According to a Bedrock Polling survey of 866 likely voters, Poindexter holds an eight-point lead over Miller.
