Colorado Governor Candidate Victor Marx’s Controversial Stance on Abortion
Victor Marx, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Colorado, has sparked controversy with his strong opposition to abortion rights, often using provocative language to express his views.
As a pastor since 2003, Marx has collaborated extensively with anti-abortion organizations for nearly two decades. He advocates for a complete ban on abortion, supporting no exceptions, even in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is at risk. More information on his stance can be found here.
Colorado remains one of the few states without restrictions on the timing of pregnancy termination, making it a refuge for women from states with stringent abortion bans. In 2024, a significant 62% of Colorado voters supported enshrining reproductive rights in the state constitution.
In August, Marx referred to abortion as an “example of occultic activities” practiced openly in Colorado through a Facebook post.
He stated, “This state, they kill babies. Wholesale slaughter. A girl teenager can drive in our state, get an abortion, you have to pay for it. She can drive back over that line and get to her parents and never know. Our state needs to repent.”
During the same period, his running mate George Markert expressed his disapproval of the state’s reproductive rights amendment to FOX31 in Denver, pledging to work towards its repeal if elected as lieutenant governor.
Marx often frames his arguments against abortion in religious terms. In a conversation with the late podcaster Charlie Kirk in 2022, he described abortion as “evil” and a “manifestation of darkness.”
Through his own podcast, Marx discusses the intersection of Christianity and politics. A 2023 episode featured his viewpoint on the abortion rate among Black communities, which he referred to as a “self-inflicted genocide,” alleging it was being used as “a horrific form of birth control.”
In another interview on Rumble in 2023, Marx attributed societal issues among women to abortion, stating, “People wonder why so many angry women and Karens are out there. When you kill your own child, you know, your soul knows it, your body knows it. And say what you want, it wounds you.”
In 2007, the Waco Tribune-Herald profiled Marx during his efforts to establish an academy for troubled youth with a Christian nonprofit. The article noted his past role as an assistant to James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, a group opposing abortion rights and described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. In response to Marx’s statements, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, along with Cobalt and COLOR, held a joint press conference in August to denounce his views and candidacy. Claudia Pérez, the group’s Director of Public Affairs, remarked, “He has repeatedly used language designed to dehumanize, shame, and stigmatize people seeking care. He is part of a movement that believes government should have the power to override deeply personal medical decisions.”
Marx’s Democratic opponent in the gubernatorial race is Phil Weiser, the current state Attorney General, who has pledged to protect reproductive rights if elected.
