Flagstaff, Arizona, could soon see significant advancements in its water supply infrastructure. A recent decision by the Bureau of Reclamation marks the initial phase of a major water initiative aimed at enhancing the city’s water resilience.
For almost 20 years, Flagstaff has controlled the water resources at Red Gap Ranch. The city is now closer to implementing a long-debated water pipeline project, following the Bureau’s commitment to conduct an appraisal-level study. This study will evaluate the pipeline’s feasibility, design, and associated costs, marking a critical federal step towards the project’s realization.
The proposed pipeline is projected to extend over 35 miles, linking Red Gap Ranch with Flagstaff, thereby potentially bolstering the city’s water supply against drought and other emergencies.
This initiative gains momentum from the backing of Governor Katie Hobbs and Senator Mark Kelly, aligning with an expansive tribal water rights agreement established last autumn.
