Residents Return Home as Greer Fire Evacuation Orders are Lifted

Residents in the White Mountains breathed a sigh of relief as officials announced they could return home following the Greer Fire evacuation. The fire, which had rapidly consumed nearly 20,308 acres since last Tuesday, had led to the destruction of several structures and prompted evacuations in communities such as Greer, Eagar, and South Fork.

During a community meeting held on Monday night, Forest Service leaders indicated that while a small risk remains, they were confident enough in the containment efforts to allow residents to return. With the blaze now 55% contained, officials advised residents to stay vigilant and prepared for possible re-evacuation. Access will be limited to residents and business owners only.

Despite challenging weather conditions, with wind gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour, containment lines held firm on Monday. A forecasted high-pressure system is expected to bring calmer winds until the weekend, providing a favorable environment for firefighting efforts.

Firefighters are set to begin a suppression repair plan today, which involves rehabilitating no longer needed dozer and hand lines. Crews will also continue to conduct interior mop-up operations, targeting hot spots to reinforce the perimeter of the fire.

As for transportation, State Route 260 has been reopened to traffic. However, SR 261 remains closed between Mitt Tank and SR 260.
